The
Caisis project was initiated in January of 2002 to
replace a research database that had been in use for
over five years. The first iteration of the application
was built using Microsoft Access and focused mainly
on the management of prostate surgical data. As the
number of users and requirements increased, a decision
was made to review commercially available applications
to replace the current database. Several systems were
reviewed, but none could meet some of our most basic
requirements: cost effectiveness in terms of both
ownership and maintenance, straightforward administration
by a small group, and the flexibility and expandability
to meet the evolving needs of a fast-paced, research
oriented hospital. Disappointed by the systems available,
an internal team was organized and charged with the
daunting task of developing a replacement database.
